NYS Learning Standard #3: Responding to and analyzing works of art Students will respond critically to a variety of works in the arts... The Artist Spotlight board is a display of works from one artist that changes bi-weekly. Students choose a work from the board and complete the Art Critique Form available in class, or as a download from this site. The form can be completed on the computer and then printed. It is based on Feldman's model of art criticism (description, analysis, interpretation and judgement), which is the subject of the class handout below. Students may also choose art work from the web site provided, as long as a print out of the piece is turned in with the typed critique. I am familiar with the work on the Spotlight board, but may not be familiar with all the work of a particular artist. What follows is a list of the artists, web sites and the handout from class. The artist list will be updated bi-weekly. Description “What do you see?” This may include, but not be limited to: Artist’s name title of the work medium date of the work elements of art subject matter- what is going on Analysis “How is the work (art elements) organized?” “How did the artist do what you see?” The principles of design help to organize the art elements. How are they used? For Emphasis, ask yourself, “What stands out the most when you first look at it?” Why do you think this is the first thing you see? How do you eyes move through the piece? What makes your eyes move this way? What makes the whole piece work together? Interpretation “What is the artist trying to communicate?” How do these particular elements and principles, and the way they are used, make you feel? Your feelings are personal so your interpretation could be totally unique. Imagine the feelings and meanings the art work represents. Judgment/Evaluation Is the work successful? Why or why not? Compare this work to other works by the same artist, or another artist working in the same style or material. How do you feel about this work? Do you like any part of this work? Why or why not?
