The Principles of Design

This year we will continue working with the Elements of Art.  They are the tools every artist uses to create art.  We will also be learning about the Principles of Design to help us organize the Elements of Art and create interesting compositions.

Balance

Symmetrical balance is when two halves of a composition are identical or very similar.   Asymmetrical balance is when two halves are different or unequal.

Emphasis

The point of emphasis is the focal point in a piece of art.  Where does our eye go to first?  What stands out?

Contrast

Differences in color, shape, lines, values, and textures that help to create variety and more visual interest.

Movement, Pattern, Rhythm

These principles are all related because each uses the repetition of elements. Movement helps direct our eyes through a piece of art.  Rhythm helps to organize space by repeating elements.  Pattern helps to create more visual interest by repeating similar colors, shapes, lines, values and textures. Rhythm and Pattern can be regular,(orderly) or irregular (random).

Unity

What ties it all together?  When all the elements and principles used in a composition are working together.
